A Foster Family’s Courage: Supporting Seven Orphans in Ukraine

Blog | FH Alliance | Ukraine

At the start of the war, many Ukrainian orphanages were evacuated to Western Europe. But thousands of children—especially those already living with foster families—remained in Ukraine. These children, many of them newly orphaned by war, are among Frontier Horizon’s primary focus today.

One of those families is Anatoli and Natalia’s in Cherkasy, a town three hours south of Kyiv. Over the years, they have opened their home and hearts to seven foster children, each with a story of resilience and hope:

  • Oleg joined the family at age 3 after his parents lost custody. Now a teenager, he is an excellent student, sings in a church choir, and dreams of owning his own bicycle so he can keep pursuing his love of sports and mechanics.
  • Veronika, born in 2012, lost her mother and survived life-threatening burns at age 2. With support from Frontier Horizon donors, she has already received two surgeries and will continue treatment in the U.S. after the war.
  • Anastasia, placed in 2020, is thriving at school and shines as a singer, often winning prizes at music competitions. Thanks to FH donors, she also received much-needed dental care.
  • Dariia, who lost her father and was abandoned by her mother, loves math, chemistry, and physics. She dreams of becoming a dentist and sings joyfully in the family’s choir.
  • Bogdan lost his single mother in 2019. Struggling with food insecurity as a young child, he still worries about not having enough to eat. Today, he loves math and computer games, with hopes of becoming a historian.
  • Valeria, orphaned in 2021, is thriving in school and shares her love of singing with her foster siblings.
  • Liliia, placed with the family in 2013, is gifted in sewing, knitting, and music.

Caring for seven children is a challenge under any circumstance—but for a Ukrainian family living through war and economic hardship, it is especially daunting.

This is where your partnership makes all the difference. A monthly sponsorship of just $49 per child helps provide food, clothing, education, and medical care—not just for survival, but for a future filled with possibility.

When you give monthly through the Frontier Horizon Alliance, you are not only changing lives today, you are giving children the stability and hope they desperately need for tomorrow.

Together, we can ensure that families like Anatoli and Natalia’s never face these challenges alone.
