In Loving Memory of Alla
1988 – 2000
“In March of 2000, I went on a mission trip to Ukraine, spent about two weeks there, and left on March 13. A week later, I heard that Alla, an 11-year-old girl from Orphanage # 4, had died (possibly of appendicitis) on March 20. Evidently, she started complaining of severe pain on Monday night, suffered through the night, and died Tuesday morning. I was devastated. “If only I had been there one more week,” I kept saying, “I could have done something. I could have sent her to another hospital and paid for a special clinic. I could have done something.” This tragedy brought home the fact that many of these kids have no one else in the world. If it’s not me, who will it be?”
